Spring Pruning of Shrub Roses

Whether you are planting a new rose or one that’s already established in your garden, it is worth taking the time to prune them in early spring.

How to do it? First, cut back dead wood to healthy shoots and prune out any stems that are diseased or spindly. Crossing stems can be cut back to healthy growth or pruned back to where they originated.
If there are two branches growing off of a strong one, follow them back to their origin and select the one that is best aligned with the original stem, cutting the other one back to its base: doing this will let air and light into the bush

Finally, cut back stems by one third. Doing this will keep the bush from becoming too leggy and allow the bush to put more energy into creating an abundance of flowers.
