But what are the factors that go into making efficient raised beds? First, the term ‘raised beds’ usually refers to geometric structures that are bottomless and are higher than the soil surrounding them.
One requirement is that the width of the beds should be narrow enough so that the growing area can be reached from all sides without stepping onto the soil. The width should be no more than four feet but is ideal when thirty inches wide. The height of the beds can be customized but two feet is the average. They should be strong enough so that you can sit on the edge comfortably. Another factor that goes into creating environmentally friendly raised beds is to avoid using chemically treated lumber for the frames.
