Beets Bulls Red

There are certain veggies that not only can be used for eating but that also add great color and shape to the mixed border.

Beta vulgaris, commonly known as Beets ‘Bulls Blood’ is mostly grown for its sweet, tender outstanding burgundy foliage: it has a height of 18 inches. But the beets are also delicious when harvested at 2-3 inches. Resow every 2-3 weeks for a continuous supply of healthy leaves.

In recent years though, this heirloom beet has been used by keen gardeners in the mixed border. Coupled with almost any other colored plant material, ‘Bull’s Blood’ makes a great foil. My favorite combination is its deep burgundy color planted next to a yellow leaved plant.

‘Bulls Blood’ does best in full sun or partial shade in rich, light, moist soil. It needs extra water during droughts.
