Simple and Single Digging

When digging in your garden, it’s helpful to know different ways of doing it.

The easiest type is simple digging. All you have to do is dig up a spade of soil, dropping it down next to the hole and then chopping it up with the end of a spade. Simple digging works well when you’re adding organic matter to the soil.

Single digging takes a bit more time. First, outline a rectangular area and then start digging one trench, the depth of the spade, about 12 inches wide and as long as you want. Place the soil on the side of the trench and then using the same amount of untouched soil in the bed near it, drop that soil into the trench. Continue this process until the entire bed has been totally dug up and refilled with new soil.
