Magnolia 'Black Tulip'

Gardeners throughout the country love magnolias.

And for a lot of us, you can never have enough of them. This spring, there’s a magnificent, new variety available. Magnolia ‘Black Tulip’ has dark black-purple blooms that are the darkest flowers of any magnolia. They’re reminiscent of goblet-shaped purple/black tulips, though much larger, averaging around six inches in diameter each.

A deciduous upright tree, at maturity it can grow to 25 feet high and 12 feet wide. The tree flowers in early spring before the leaves emerge. A mature tree can produce more than 150 blossoms.

‘Black Tulip’ can survive in colder climates: it’s hardy down to USDA zone 5. Plant it in full sun in well drained soil, ideally in a location that offers shelter from strong winds. Water regularly, especially for the first year, while settling in.
